Concerned about lack of sediment controls?

We need to protect our waterways. Sediment run-off can destroy aquatic habitats and smother native plants and animals and can also increase siltation in our bays and estuaries.

There’s a lot of development happening in Lane Cove at the moment.

One of the issues is that developers can only be fined $6k per breach of development controls. They can also get fined via the POEO Act for pollution.

The most recent incident at Berrys Creek, which was caused by sediment runoff from a development in the St Leonards South precinct has, once again, highlighted the inadequacies of the fines. The developer received a 6k fine (this isn’t the first time this developer has caused sediment run-off) as well as an 8k fine for polluting our waterways.

This part of our Bushland has also recently been heritage listed!

If fines were higher, doubling or tripling each time, there might be more incentive to take care of our environment!
