Did you know property developers can be on council?
You can thank the Liberals for this one. They have continuously shrunk away from any attempts to amend legislation in this area. Who are they protecting? It’s absurd - you can’t accept donations from property developers as a candidate or councillor but you can BE a property developer and sit on council.
This needs to change.
The Green and Labor have a policy that every party candidate and councillor must affirm they are not a property developer.
A Labor bill to amend local government law to disqualify real estate agents and property developers from holding civic office passed the NSW upper house in mid-November 2021.
But it didn’t pass through the lower house in time for this election. And we are seeing the consequences of that already this election all over NSW.
We need to stop situations like that of this Liberal Mayor / property developer in Strathfield happening as soon as possible.
This is a threat to our democracy and our community’s wellbeing. Having property developers on council means there’s potential for them to have access to information the public doesn't so they are able to influence decisions on zonings and development applications.
NONE of my team have any ties to property development.
I am also a long-term member of the Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society which has been advocating to protect our community from inappropriate development for 50 years.
I will be a vocal voice to advocate that the legislation is changed to protect our community from people who are joining council to push their own problematic agendas and those of developers.
Press play to hear some thoughts from me on integrity and this election.
For more integrity inside council chambers and to elect someone who is just here to advocate for YOU - vote 1 Bridget Kennedy for Lane Cove - Central Ward this election.
