Grass roots change: It comes from the community

I’m all about leading with grass roots change. In the 20 years I have lived in Lane Cove, I have launched a number of community-based initiatives in response to community challenges.

Yesterday I caught up Joel Spry at ABC Darwin about my project The Sydney Library of Things.

Check out the interview here at the 4:16:46 mark.

With The Sydney Library of Things, we want to encourage people to borrow instead of buying new items that they only need for a short time. We also want to discourage people throwing away their unwanted items.

I really believe in the power of ordinary people to get practical, grassroots, sustainability initiatives like this off the ground.

Some Lane Cove locals might remember one of the early ones I worked on? The Lane Cove Toy Swap held in the mall in 2010.

Together we can create a better connected, more sustainable and stronger community.

Practical projects that bring people together

I'm also the instigator of the Sydney Edible Garden Trail and was one of the co-founders of the Repair Cafe Sydney North.

Got a great idea you want to get off the ground? Check out Good For The Hood. They're a social enterprise and have got a lot of great free resources to support projects.

As a Lane Cove Councillor I would want to support more of practical, sustainability based initiatives in our area.

Food waste is an area I really want to see more local action in! I am a member of a local Share Waste initiative. But I would like to see council be more proactive.
